Objectives
Trainees who successfully complete this course should be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge, skill and understanding of ECDIS navigation and electronic charts to undertake the duties of a navigational watch officer defined by the STCW Code, as amended. This knowledge, skill and understanding should include the ECDIS competencies in Column 1 of Tables A-II, and should also include the:
- Knowledge of the capability and limitations of ECDIS operations, and all indicated sub-topics
- Proficiency in operation, interpretation and analysis of information obtained from ECDIS and all indicated sub-topics
- Management of operational procedures, system files, data and all indicated sub-topics
Course certificate
Documentary evidence shall be issued to those who have successfully completed this course indicating that the holder has completed training in Electronic And Information Systems as approved by the Merchant Shipping Division of the Government of Sri Lanka.
The aims for this course are detailed below, in the objectives section.
The candidates for the course should posses some knowledge on
Terrestrial Navigation and at minimum some familiarisation with visual navigation, completed a period of supervised bridge watch-keeping duties, and have prior knowledge of basic radar/ARPA (MC 1.07). Trainees should also have considerable familiarisation with personal computing operating systems, keyboards and mouse trackballs.

The trainees undertaking this course should have undergone pre-sea training for deck cadets and sea service if not less than six months as a Deck Cadet,
OR
The trainee should have competence in deck training, have completed sea service for the Certificate of Competency as Second Mate FG or NWKO (NCV) and have attended the relevant competency course for the respective grade.
